WALKING TOUR OF
HISTORIC MANOA HOMES
May 2009
A Stroll Back in Time
"…the peculiar charm of Manoa in the complete surprise with which its beauty bursts upon the visitor on reaching the summit of the road at Pu'u Pueo…" Thrum's Hawaiian Annual, 1898
The beauty of the summit of Pu'u Pueo still remains, and the 400 visitors who joined this years Historic Homes Walking Tour were treated to a wonderful stroll through Terrace Drive and nearby areas.
The day felt like a gigantic street party, with people running in to old friends, talking story, and viewing the historic homes and neighborhood. Eight homes, six of which are listed on the State Register of Historic Places, were open for public viewing and numerous other points of historical interest were featured on the mile and a half walk.
Hawaiian tradition relates that at one time the menehune controlled all of upper Manoa Valley. The summit of the road, where the Seventh Day Adventist church is located today, was called Pu'u Pueo, and was occupied by owls. Eventually the owls drove the menehune out of the valley. The name Pu'u Pueo has lived on, and the area became known as the Pu'u Pueo tract. Starting in 1898 and continuing to the 1930s, this area began to be developed, resulting in the wonderful old homes that we see today.
Members of the Walking Tour Committee were Pat Avery, Pat Chung, Diane Ito, Linda LeGrande, Maura Okamoto, Jackie Scott, Jean Trapido-Rosenthal, and Jan Tucker. Thanks to them, and to the 80 plus Malama o Manoa volunteers and historic home owners who shared the wonders of Pu'u Pueo, Manoa Valley.
